The Duolingo English Test is a modern English proficiency assessment for today’s international students and institutions. The test is available online, on demand. You don’t have to make an appointment or travel to a test center—you can take the test from your home via a computer and webcam.

One of the advantages of the Duolingo English Test is that you can choose your own testing environment and testing time. There are a few general guidelines to help you consider where and when to take the test.

Comfortable
Take the test when and where you feel most comfortable. This doesn’t have to be in your own home, as long as you can ensure privacy.
Quiet
You don’t want any background noise to interfere with your responses or distract you.
Private
Make sure no one disturbs you. Tip: put a “do not disturb” note on the door!
Bright
The proctors will need to be able to clearly see and hear you throughout the test, so make sure the room is not too dark.

The Duolingo English Test costs US $49.

The Duolingo English Test takes about one hour to complete.

Once you complete and submit a test, you will need to wait for your results before taking a new test.
You may receive certified results for up to two tests in a 30-day period, which starts on the completion date of your first certified test. If you complete a test and your results are not certified, it will not count against this limit.

Results for the Duolingo English Test are valid for two years.

In order to take the test, you will need a working web camera and microphone.
If your camera or microphone are not installed properly, you will be unable to start the test.

• Go to the Windows Start Button > Settings > Camera or Microphone.
• Scroll to see Allow desktop apps to access your camera (or microphone).
• Enable camera (or microphone) access by selecting the button until you see the word “On.”

• Go to the Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy tab.
• Unlock (click) the lock icon in the lower left to allow you to make changes to your preferences.
• Click Camera in the left sidebar and then select the checkbox next to the Duolingo English Test app icon.

The exam portion of the Duolingo English Test contains a series of speaking, reading, writing, and listening exercises. This portion is graded.
The second, ungraded portion of the exam consists of a video interview and writing sample. In each section, the test taker will be able to respond to one of two prompts offered.

After logging in, you can take a Practice Test to try sample questions in the same format as on the full test and have the option of estimating your English proficiency.

Please note that the Practice Test is much shorter than the Certified Test, so the estimated score range given at the end may not accurately measure your proficiency.

If you are under 13 years old (or below the cutoff age for requiring parental consent in your country), you will need a parent or guardian to provide their permission for you to take the test.

You may wear a religious head covering that covers your ears while taking the test. Your eyes and mouth must be uncovered and visible.

The Duolingo English Test desktop app will not download in Linux, but you can still use Linux to take the test through your web browser. Once you have purchased the test, click Start Test to begin the test in your browser.

The Duolingo English Test desktop application will not allow hybrid 2-in-1 computing devices to enable the camera swap functionality between the front and back camera.
We recommend that you use a different device such as a laptop or full desktop computer to complete your test.

First off, please make sure that you’re using the most recent version of one of our supported browsers.
• Once the test starts to upload, do not open any additional programs, windows, or attempt to refresh the page.
• Ensure that you are on a stable internet connection. If the wireless internet signal isn’t strong, use a wired connection.
• If the test stops uploading, or fails to upload, the system will automatically try again five times. After the fifth attempt, the test will not upload and you will need to take the entire test again. Please note, you will not have to pay again if this problem occurs.

We utilize the photos of yourself and your ID to verify your identity. Most standardized exams require similar verification of your identity.
Please make sure that the photo of your ID is clear, so that your face and name are both clear and legible. Failure to provide a clear photo of your ID will prevent your Duolingo English Test results from being certified.

We are working on making the Duolingo English Test more convenient to use from as many countries as possible. If your country or type of ID does not appear in the relevant dropdown menu.

We require that you enable your webcam while taking the test so that our proctors can review your test video. A webcam is also required for you to complete the video interview section of the Duolingo English Test, which is sent to institutions along with your proficiency score.

Yes. After you complete and upload your test, a proctor will review your test video to ensure test integrity before certifying your test. Please read all of the requirements before taking the test to make sure your results get certified

Statistical machine learning algorithms are used to score the Duolingo English Test based on the content of your responses. Time taken per question does not affect your score.
You will not be penalized more for entering an incorrect response to a question rather than skipping the question. For c-test questions, you will receive the same score for a blank or an incorrect response. For listen/transcription questions, you will be penalized more for omitting a word than mistyping the word.

This is a common issue with less stable internet connections.
Your camera may be working properly, but the audio may be delayed due to a server or internet issue which makes the test session very difficult to proctor.
In these cases, we suggest trying again. We will give you another test credit to do this.

The 100-point scale is in increments of 1 point, and the 160-point scale is in increments of 5 points.

You will receive your Duolingo English Test results within 48 hours of completing the test.

You will get an email notification once the results are available.

After your test has been graded and reviewed, a notification of your results will be emailed to you at the email address provided during registration.
